Examples of figurative language in the giver

Figurative Language

In The Giver, the used of what they referred to as "precise language" is strictly enforced at all times. So, needless to say, the first use of figurative language does not happen until much later, after Jonas meets the Giver. I'm sure that you may have noticed that I referenced the first instance of figurative language on the Theme and Structure page. The first instance of figurative language in The Giver, is used by the titular character of the book. It is used when the Giver tries to explain how them memories burden him by using the example of going downhill on a sled in deep snow. Although, the example is lost on Jonas as he has no idea what any of those things are. Another use of figurative language in The Giver is from page 125-126, when Jonas recalls the memory that the Giver had shared with him that day. He describes the place very vividly., and the figurative language is very slight, as there is not much in this nook, but it does convey to you the imagery presents in the chapter in an easier manner. There are a few more uses of this in The Giver, so when you read, keep an eye out for them, or you might miss them.

Style

The style of The Giver is one that really draws you in and uses a lot of imagery within it. I would have to say that I haven't really experienced a style like Lois Lowry's in any other books that I've read. Some have similar aspects, but none of them are really close. The Imagery really draws you in amend brings the dreams to life. Imagery in The Giver is plentiful after Jonas' meeting with the Giver, as the memories are all described with breathtaking and thorough imagery., Upon my reading of The Giver, I remember getting immersed in the book, so I would say that The Giver has a very immersive style. One that lets you easily become intertwined in the story and become unable to put it down. One example of the beautiful imagery in this book, is when The Giver transmitted the memory of war to Jonas. The scene is described as "grotesquely bright; blood-soaked earth; and a fearsome stench." This is the first tryely horrible memory that Jonas revives, which is also the memory that opens his eyes to what his life will become ads the new Receiver of Memory.
